Sekon ( Hello ) from the Heron Room!
It has been a very exciting year! We have 21 students in our classroom. Seven students have transferred from other schools outside of our board to our class this year. We have new faces and lots of new ideas.
This year the students participated in a Board-wide Science Fair. It is the school's third year participating. The top students from the board fair then go on to participate in a county fair. Some students even advance to national competition. Fifteen students from our board competed in the national fair in Albuquerque, New Mexico in April. While preparing for the science fair, students got to use the Internet for the first time to access information on their chosen research topic.
As a part of our Language Arts Program, the students read a book entitled Project Egg. The students brought in eggs, named them, clothed them, and had to care for them for one week. The students learned about how to become responsible for someone or something else. It was a lot of fun! Some students dropped their eggs in a matter of minutes, whereas others were Eggs-tra Special Parents. The students had to get a babysitter for their eggbie if they were busy with other things. I recommend this book and activity as a fun way to learn about a small part of what a parent's role in the family is. Please share any of your experiences with novels with me.
This year our pen pals are from Illinois. Every year staff from the Weekly Reader set up our class with another class to correspond with. The pen pals are from another town in the U.S. who have a similar class size. There are minimal requirements for the teacher. You simply fill out a form giving some details about your community. I've been doing this with my classes for the last seven years. It has really provided students with an opportunity to learn some things about other kids their age. They learn about things that they have in common with others, as well as develop an understanding of some of the differences. Weekly Reader is a current events newspaper geared for kids. I highly recommend it!
Onen. ( Good-bye )
