ABOUT OUR CONGREGATION

Knox - St. Paul's United Church came into being in January, 1981 as the result of the amalgamation of the former Knox and St. Paul's congregations.

The Knox congregation, with a Scottish Presbyterian background dates back to 1846, while that of St. Paul's with a Methodist tradition, began in Cornwall in 1792.  In 1925, both congregations entered into Church Union to become part of the United Church of Canada.

In 1978, the St. Paul's building, formerly located at the corner of First and Sydney Streets, was sold to a commercial developer to make way for the present Cornwall Square Shopping Center.   The congregation then accepted the kind offer of Knox United Church to share its facilities until a definite decision was made about the future of St. Paul's.  As time went on, and it became apparent that these arrangements were beneficial to both congregations. a Joint Planning Committee was established to investigate the feasibility of amalgamation.  Studies were made and eventually a plan for the harmonious merging of all aspects of church life were presented to both congregations at a joint service and congregational meeting in November, 1980.  Both congregations gave their overwhelming support to this proposal, and on January 1, 1981, the new congregation was born.

In a way, the amalgamation was merely a formalization of a valuable co-operative ministry that had already existed for many years between the two congregations. As we look to the future,  it is our continuing hope that our two traditions and the new spirit of unity manifest in our amalgamation will enrich our ministry to the people of Cornwall and area.
