PREVENTION AND PROMOTION

COMMUNITY HEALTH NURSING
The Community Health Nurses and staff assist community members to take responsibility for maintaining and improving their own health. Hosting health awareness sessions on hypertension, women's and men's issues, AIDS and diabetes. Holding screening clinics for diabetes, hearing testing, hypertension, and TB. Sponsoring immunization clinics and welcome walk-ins for immunization updates. Confidential pre- and post-test counseling, as well as HIV testing. Also offered are Prenatal Health Education classes and, in the school setting, Health Education classes for grades 4 - 8 in AIDS education, growth & development and diabetes awareness.

ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH OFFICER
The EHO (Environmental Health Officer) holds routine inpections of food, sewage, water, environmental contamination, and occupational health.
At your request, the EHO can document environmental risks in your home for referral to the Department of Housing. This "routine inspection" can assist you to get a housing loan. This office is in Kawehnoke. The phone number is 936-0760.

COMMUNITY HEALTH REPRESENTATIVES
CHR's (Community Health Representatives) provide a monitoring, education, and referral service. They test home water and waste water systems. They work in conjunction with a health team on health screening, wellness workshops, and specialty clinics. They also assist the EHO with routine inspections of food, sewage, and water. At your request, they can document home health risks for referral to the Department of Housing. Their "routine inspection" can assist you to get a housing loan.

NUTRITION PROGRAM
A Registered Dietician provides you with information and resources through radio, newspaper, and personal appearance at public health activities. The registered dietician also consults on menu planning with the cooks of residential, education, and other facilities. You can receive one-to-one counseling on special diets; the Registered Dietician provides school education as well as education within group settings.

TRADITIONAL MEDICINE
This innovative program was introduced to educate and create awareness among staff, community members, and Western practitioners about "Indian Medicine".
The Coordinator, a Mohawk nurse, asseses your overall health condition, directs you to a traditional healer, monitors progress, and works collaboratively with that healer and other health
professionals (your doctor and other health personnel), and provides follow-up.

OUTREACH PROGRAM
An Outreach Worker makes sure that eligible First Nation citizens in Cornwall have access to health services in Akwesasne. The Outreach Worker does this by making pamphlets, brochures and resource material available to related outside service agencies so they may make proper referrals and by providing medical transportation to our urban clients. AKWESASNE/KAWEHNOKE MEDICAL CLINICS
The Akwesasne/Kawehnoke Medical Clinics bring both family physicians and specialists to the community. The Clinics encourage that appointments be made, whenever possible. The Akwesasne Medical Clinic, located in Kanonhkwatsheri:io (575-2341), is open from 8:30 - 4:00 Monday through Friday and, on Saturday, from 9:00 to noon.
The Kawehnoke Medical Clinic, located at Tsiionkwanohnso:te, is open on Tuesday and Thursday mornings (8:30 - 10:30) and on Friday morning (9:00 - 12:00). Their phone numbers are 9326302 or 932-5808.


AKWESASNE DENTAL CLINIC
The Akwesasne Dental Clinic provides general dentistry from Monday - Friday, 8:30 - 4:00. A Periodontist (gum specialist), Orthodontist (braces), Endonontist (root canal) and Oral Surgeon (implants, etc.) are also available through appointment. The clinic is located in Kanonhkwatsheri:io. NON-INSURED HEALTH BENEFITS
The Akwesasne Non-Insured Health Services program was transferred to Akwesasne to avoid the cutbacks that would be applicable to all natives across Canada. The program consists of seven componants which are: Dental; Pharmacy; Allied Health; Transportation; Medical Supplies; Medical Equipment; OHIP/QHIP Differential.

MOHAWK COUNCIL AMBULANCE UNIT
The Mohawk Couneil Ambulance Unit is a 24-hour emergency medical care and transportation service. They can provide
ambulance transport for invalids if planned in advance. They provide CPR and First Aid training for organizations or individuals.

AKWESASNE ADDICTIONS & COUNSELING
The Addictions and Counselling Program is an education center for increased resistance to the use of drugs and or alcohol by all individuals with the emphasis on youth. The division designs, coordinates, and sponsors activities, projects, and or workshops which are aimed at instilling a sense of personal responsibility and confidence. Individual support, counselling assesments, and referrals to inpatient treatment are available to all community members.
