The Purpose:
To provide a safe, non-institutional environment, where the needs of domestic violence victims and their families can be met. Every women will be listened to in a non-judgemental manner, that will recognize the validity and truth of her situation. The staff will provide information on options the women may have, so that each person may gain a better perspective on her situation. The intervention encourages enhanced self-esteem, additional problem solving skills and the ability to utilize existing resources. The cultural, traditional and spiritual values of our Native heritage are an integral part of all services provided by the shelter staff.




Violence is a learned behavior and we are comitted to be part of the "un-learning" process.
We say "part", because it will take the whole community to re-discover the path of the Mohawk people.

The Mandate

To provide a comprehensive program of services to the Akwesasne community.

These services include:
* Programs and activities designed to enhance community awareness and understanding of
the dynamics of Family Violence.
* Workshops and conferences geared towards the prevention of Family Violence.
* Traditional and contemporary intervention in all reported family violence situations.
* Individual and group intervention for abusive partners, who seek alternatives for their
violent behavior.
* Follow-up services and support for all former residents and other affected community
members.

The Network
Iethinisten:ha Iethinonronhkhwa is a program, operating under the guidelines of the Social Development and Health Department of the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne.



General Information:

The emergency shelter for Mohawk women with/without children who are victims of domestic violence, is located within the territory of Akwesasne.
Trained counsellors are on staff 24hrs, seven days a week.
Non-judgemental individual counselling sessions, support groups and Healing Circles are facilitated.
Security and confedentiality are given highest priority.
A strong cultural component is part of all intervention.
Every family has their own comfortable bedroom and bathroom.
Child Care workers are available to meet the needs of the children.
Referrals from other First Nations are accepted, if the the security of the family requires relocation.
