The Community Support Program delivers financial benefits to residents of
Akwesasne who are in need by assisting clients with their basic needs such
as food, clothing and shelter. Under certain circumstances, they help with
other needs such as house repairs, funeral assistance, moving expenses,
travel, vocational preparation, job start-up costs, tuition assistance,
day care and other emergency expenses. For Akwesasne residents, school clothing
allowance is provided in August, also, for children under school age, there
is a clothing allotment in November, called a Snowsuit Allowance. When the
Province of Ontario also allows it, a Christmas bonus is provided.
Assistance may be available for special expenses when there is a financial
need. If a family is not on assistance, has a low income and has a special
need they can apply to the program. A financial assessment is completed
to verify eligibility for assistance.
Disability benefits and long term assistance is available to single parents
who reside on the Quebec portion of Akwesasne. The Ontario Family Benefits
program gives the same assistance to those who reside on Cornwall Island.
In collaboration with the MCA Housing Program, there is a housing project
for ten workers. It is expected to have another project started in the fall.
The program is working with Adult Education to have their clients attend
courses. Adult Education will be starting a Workplace Skills Program in
the fall. The courses in the past were very successful. When previous classes
ended, the participants were ready to take other courses or look for jobs.
The Community Support Program is the program which gives financial support
to those who are in need of assistance for basic needs, shelter and other
assistance.
The entire program is based on financial need. Clients are asked to document
their need before any assistance is approved.
