IAKHIHSOHTHA is a modern 30 bed home for the elderly located in Akwesasne Territory (Snye, Quebec). The home has been designed with the most modern, efficient equipment devoted to meet the needs of our elderly.

We respect our elders, for the key of the seven generations lies in the hearts of yesterday.

Level of Care
Applications are assesed based upon our facilitie's ability to meet their carelevel requirements. Ideal residents for our Home are elders who require minimal assistance. IAKHIHSOHTHA provides 24 hour a day supervisory care and is licensed by the Province of Quebec.

The Quality of our "Home" is determined by the Quality of Team: Everyone is Responsible.

Our Community
We believe we are stronger with the community as a partner in our efforts. We welcome the community in our home, not only because it is right, but also because together we achieve results we could not realize on our own.

The Facility
IAKHIHSOHTHA'S building and grounds offer many features, some of which include:
-30 bedroom units (20 private and 5 semi-private)
-(spacious rooms in which we encourage our residents to decorate so that they will feel at home), -activity room

The Staff

IAKHIHSOHTHA employs 26 full time and additional part time staff. These highly trained proffessionals posses the necessary skills to make life at IAKHIHSOHTHA pleasant for our elderly. We provide on-going training to our employees to meet our high standards.

The Services
IAKHIHSOHTHA provides a wide range of programs to meet our residents health, nutritional, social and recreational needs. A licensed physician visits the facility weekly and is available upon request. A community health nurse visits twice a week and initiates stretching exercises for our residents as well as our Day Program Participants. A certified nurse visits our facility every three months and provides foot care services, and a certified physio-therapist isits the facility 3 times a week. We also employ a full time Activity Director who is responsible for planning social and recreational events for all of our residents. With our certified health care, activity and dietary staff, we are confident that the residents will have the care they require and deserve.

The Programs
IAKHIHSOHTHA offers a Day Program. The Day Program was created in November 1994. The day program service which offers the following to it's participants:
-transportation (if needed by the participant)
-noontime meal (in accordance with dietary needs).
-afternoon snack
- a balance a varied activities designed to promote participant well-being and maintain their independence.
-refer participants to other community services/programs if needed/wanted by the participant.

The purpose of the Day Program is to provide it's participants with the opportunity to socialize with their peers and an opportunity to attend functions outside of their homes, especially those who are isolated or lonely. The program also provides companionship for currant residents of IAKHIHSOHTHA and can provide respite for at home care givers. We offer the program twice a week. Applicants must be 60 years and older, there are exceptions.

IAKHIHSOHTHA publishes a monthly newsletter. This provides information to the community on activities inside the home, ie, parties birthdays, outings,new admissions, calendar of events.

We also have Residents' Council which takes an active role in helping plan the activities in IAKHIHSOHTHA.

A unique part of our facility is that many of our staff speak Mohawk. This enables good communication and dialogue amongst our people and illustrates the respect and dignity we continue to uphold in our culture.
