Mohawk Council Ambulance Unit; located
in Kanonkwatsheri:io Health Facility The Mohawk Council of Akwesasne Ambulance
Unit was established in December of 1981. We were formally known as the
St. Regis Ambulance Unit. Prior to the establishment of our service, people
in our community had to rely on outside sources for emergency medical services,
and sometimes had to wait up to forty-five minutes for an ambulance to arrive.
The leadership at that time had decided that waiting for that length of
time in an emergency situation was unacceptable, and decided that the only
way to properly care for our people was to start our own ambulance service.
Our service area covers the entire community of Akwesasne. This includes
the three districts of Kahwenoke, Kanatakon, and Tsisnaihne. It also includes
the New York State portion of the reserve and the islands in the St. Lawrence
River. We provide aid to approximately 10,000 people, and at this time are
responding to about 1,300 calls per year. Our calls vary from trauma and
sick calls, to stand by's for the Hogansburg-Akwesasne Volunteer Fire Department.
