Welcome to the General Vanier Interact Club Web Site!
The General Vanier Interact Club is comprised of approximately 35 students from General Vanier Intermediate School in Cornwall, Ontario. We undertake a variety of activities that help support our local and global community.
Interact is an international organization of service and social clubs for young people of secondary school age that fosters leadership and responsible citizenship and promotes international understanding and peace. The name was created by combining the words "international" and "action." Interact clubs are sponsored by Rotary clubs as a program of Rotary International. Rotary clubs provide guidance and inspiration, but the Interact clubs are self-governing and self-supporting.
Through their service activities, Interactors learn the importance of:
The GVIS Interact Club is sponsored by the Cornwall Sunrise Rotary .
- developing leadership skills and personal integrity
- demonstrating helpfulness and respect for others
- understanding the value of individual responsibility and hard work
- advancing international understanding and goodwill

This year, there have been many changes with the General Vanier Intermediate Interact Club. For instance, we have undergone a name change due to the Upper Canada District School Board Cornwall High Schools transition. Our school is now geared to students in grades 7 - 10. The school has adopted the logo of "GVIS the Fun and Friendly Place to Be." The GVIS Interact Club is no different.
Additionally, all of our Interactors are new to Interact as last year's Interactors have either graduated or moved on to the local senior school, Cornwall Collegiate and Vocational School.
Our enthusiastic Interactors are motivated to exemplifying the principles of Interact in both our local and international communities.
Our Executive team is lead by:
President
Vice President
Secretary
Treasurer
Sarah Neilsen
Katrina Port
Morgan Marleau
Mann-Preeti Phambri
This capable leadership team will ensure a smooth and successful transition year.

Community Service and International Projects
PolioPlus
PolioPlus is an international project spearheaded by Rotary International that seeks to eradicate polio from planet earth by the year 2005. Last year, during our annual "Interact Festival" held in Ottawa, it was suggested that Interact Clubs in District 7040 support Rotary in their mission. In the spirit of friendly competition, our club challenged others to raise $300 for PolioPlus. The St. Lawrence High School Interact Club was up to the challenge and came in with over $650. At General Vanier, we were unwilling to admit defeat, and thanks to some extra time from St. Lawrence, we managed to raise $910!!
Chalk-A-Thon for CHEO
Every spring, the GVIS Interact Club holds a Chalk-A-Thon to raise funds for The Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario . Last spring, in one afternoon, we raised $1500 for CHEO. Students had a fantastic time creating their own artistic impressions on the sidewalk outside General Vanier.
Adopt-A-Mile
Every spring and fall, the Interact Club adopts a section of a road in Cornwall and cleans it up. Brookdale Avenue between Highway 401 and Tollgate Road is where you can find us. It was a gorgeous fall day when this photo was taken.
GVIS Interact Fundraisers
Kiss the Fish
Kiss the Fish is a fundraiser that pits students against teachers and teacher against teacher. Our Interactors solicit teacher volunteers to lend their name to our fundraiser. Students place money in a fishbowl that corresponds to the name of the teacher whom they would most like to see kiss a fish. The fish, in this case, is usually the most unattractive and smelly thing imaginable. The teachers with the least amount of money in their fishbowl is eliminated. In turn, teachers decide whose fishbowl that they would like to donate their money too. Last year, physical education teacher, Guy Lamarche, was the lucky fish kisser.
Paint-A-Thon
The Paint-A-Thon is another fundraiser with the proceeds going to our mission in El Salvador. Students raise money in order to purchase a window of the GVIS cafeteria which they then paint. The windows will be judged and prizes will be awarded for Best Original Design, Best Re-creation and Most Money Raised.
Coffee House
On December 6th, we held our first ever Interact Coffee House. Students and Interactors participated by dancing, singing, and poetry reading (in addition to coffee drinking). The monies from this fundraiser are going to support our Mission to El Salvador. It was also an excellent opportunity for students, teachers and parents to see the wealth of talent that is hiding under the GVIS roof.

In January 2001, El Salvador suffered a massive earthquake which displaced many people. In March 2003, members of our club will depart for a mission to El Salvador to help those in need. During the course of our visit, we will be delivering much needed medical supplies, visiting orphanages, and participating in other humanitarian activities.
This is a photo of a landslide that occurred as a result of the earthquake.
What is Next?
For an Interactor, there is always a work in progress. We are currently running a penny drive for polio which will continue until Friday, May 9th. We are also holding Adopt-A-Mile on Saturday, April 26th. Hope to see you there!
