Cornwall Ontario Hosts

National Junior A Hockey Championships

The Road to the RBC Royal Bank Cup

Each league across Canada sends their Championship team to one of four qualifying regional Championship playing for the right to represent the region at the RBC Cup.

Since May 1996, over 140 teams in 10 hockey leagues across Canada have been vying for the title of Canada's National Junior A Hockey Champion. Winning teams in each of these 10 leagues compete in four regional championships -- The Fred Page Cup, The Dudley Hewitt Cup, The Anavet Cup, and The Doyle Cup - for the right to represent their region in the RBC Cup. These four championship teams along with the host city's team fight it out in the Royal Bank Cup to determine the National Champion.

This year, Cornwall, Ontario and the Cornwall Colts welcome the hockey world to the 2008 RBC Cup to be held May 3 -11, 2008 at the Cornwall Civic Complex.

See Tomorrow's Stars Today - Junior A Hockey and the NHL

The leagues of the CJAHL have been quite active in the National Hockey League. In fourteen drafts, 137 players have been drafted directly from CJAHL teams and into the NHL, including 7 first round picks. With 3 first round picks in 2007 including Kyle Turris to the Phoenix Coyotes, this level of hockey continues to be a training ground for many NHL players. These numbers do not include the hundreds of players who played in the CJAHL, moved up to Canadian Hockey League, NCAA or United States Hockey League and were drafted. Players currently in the NHL include Curtis Joseph, Scott Upshall, Rod Brind'Amour and Scott Gomez.

Cornwall’s Road to the RBC Cup

RBC Cup Joins Outstanding Sporting Events at Civic Complex

The RBC Cup which brings the best in Junior A Hockey to Cornwall, May 3-11, is the latest in outstanding sporting events that have been hosted by Cornwall at the Civic Complex.

In 1984, a brand new complex welcomed the World Junior Curling Championship where teams from Scotland, Norway, Sweden, the United States and Canada among others, tested the new facility and the hospitality of the City of Cornwall. The excitement of this World tournament was matched by the warm support of the many fans who packed the stands for the games. This success was followed over the next few decades by the Ontario Winter Games, the Ontario Special Olympics and the Fred Page Cup. All events received rave reviews by their provincial organizers that the fans and supporters in Cornwall couldn’t be matched and that Cornwall knows how to make visitors welcome. It’s no wonder that Cornwall was known for years as The Friendly City.

This May, people in Cornwall and the surrounding communities on both sides of the border, will once again be treated to a major sporting event. This time, it is the Canadian Junior A National Hockey Championship. From 140 teams in 10 leagues across the country, it all comes down to the RBC Cup in Cornwall and four league-winning teams along with the host team, the Cornwall Colts. In a weeklong round robin, fans will have many opportunities to see the best in Junior A Hockey and also the next great NHL players. Alumni of the RBC Cup include NHL stars Scott Gomez, Rod Brind’Amour, Mike Cammallari and Curtis Joseph. Danis Yann a former Colts player now plays with the Montreal Canadiens. The weekend wrapup to the tournament offers semi-final games on Saturday followed by the RBC Cup Championship game on Sunday televised across the country on TSN and RDS.

Each team brings its own cheering squad and these visitors to our city will be impressed with the warmth with which they are greeted and the high quality of the tournament that they have come to see. For people here at home, there are many ways to become involved and support the RBC Cup whether it’s by volunteering, sponsoring , buying a ticket package or attending games. The tradition has been set, - the RBC Cup Championship will soon be here - make sure that you are part of the excitement.

More Than Just Hockey at the RBC Cup

A week long hockey tournament with the best in Canadian Junior A Hockey should be enough excitement for everyone, but the RBC Cup organizers want to make sure that there is something for all ages and stages. A free exciting opening ceremonies with giveaways for the first fans arriving, a fanfest that runs all week, a ride in a Nascar Simulator, and Hall of Fame displays are among the activities planned. Come for a game and stay for some added fun. Get your photo taken with the players. Of course, Cup souvenirs will be in abundance.

Ontario Welcomes the RBC Cup Back

The RBC Cup has been held in Ontario only twice - once in Brampton, Ontario and now, this year in Cornwall. The Cup makes a long trek from last year’s venue in Prince George, British Columbia, to the Cornwall Civic Complex and the Ed Lumley Arena. It’s our turn to create a showcase for the four regional champions and our host team, the Cornwall Colts. The RBC Royal Bank Cup replaced the Centennial Cup in 1996 and has been held all across Canada. Now known as the RBC Cup, this tournament is an exciting sports event that will excite any hockey fan with the quality of the play as these Junior A Hockey teams compete to find out who is the best team in Canada. What an opportunity to see the Hockey stars of tomorrow in our own home town.
