This page outlines how to unzip downloaded files

In order to use many of the files you download from the internet, you must first unzip (or expand) the file which has been compressed. The file has been compressed in order to minimize its size and therefore reduce the amount of time it takes for you to download it.

In order to unzip a file you must first have an unzip utility. One such utility can be found on this page, and it is called Winzip.

Winzip is a shareware program which enables you to expand or compress files for use or storage. If you do not already have Winzip, click on the underlined portion of this sentence to download it to your hard drive.

It is an executable file (.exe) and can be run by simply selecting File Run in your Program Manager (Win 31) or with Start Run (Win 95).

TO UNZIP A DOWNLOADED FILE

Many files which you download from the internet have the extension ".zip". In order to use such files they must first be expanded or unzipped using a utility such as Winzip.

1) First select and run the Winzip program.

2) Next, open the file which you need to unzip by selecting File Open and selecting the file from the appropriate directory.

3) Once open, the Winzip program will show you the archived files which have been zipped.

4) Next select all files and choose extract.

5) The program will ask you where you wish to extract the files. Select the directory you wish the files extracted to and then choose OK.

6) The files will be stored in that directory for you to then run.

7) Exit out of Winzip

8) Go to the directory where you stored the files and run the Setup or other .exe file which was created.

9) Thats all there is to it.
