This page outlines the use of FTP and Home page storage using FTP

A very useful utility which has been provided in your IGS package is the FTP program. FTP stands for File Transfer Protocol, and is a process for tranferring files from one computer to another.

In order to transfer files from remote sites such as Microsoft, Winsock, PC Magazine and others, to your local hard drive or diskette, follow the instructions below:

1) Start the FTP program by double clicking the FTP program icon in your IGS program group.

2) Select a location to retrieve files from by highlighting the Session Profile area. You may select any of the sites shown in the list, or by entering the address of your choice in the "Host Name" section.

3) The "Host type" should be "automatic detect".

4) Anonymous login should be checked on. This will log you on the remote site as an anomymous user with a password of your email address.

5) Once connected you will see that the right hand side of the screen will contain the remote directories at the top portion and the files in the lower portion.

6) The left hand of the screen is your local hard drive or diskette drive. The default is the "c:\temp" directory.

7) In order to select the remote directory you wish to access, double click the directory name in the upper right hand corner.

8) To transfer files to your local drive, highlight the file and then press the left pointing arrow. This will start the transfer of the file, and notify you of transfer progress and time to complete.

HOME PAGE STORAGE ON OUR SERVER

1) You can use the FTP program to transfer your home page files into the local IGS server.

2) In order to do this, select IGS Cornwall as the FTP site. The Host Name should be set to "www.cnwl.igs.net".

3) You must log in using your own username and password, in order to be able to access your home directory.

4) Your home directory will be where you will need to create the ".public_html" directory to store your home page files.

5) To create this directory once logged in, click the "MkDir" button on the right hand side. Enter in ".public_html", then press OK.

6) Once this directory is created, select it by double clicking the mouse on it.

7) Next, you may transfer your ".htm" files to the ".public_html" direcotry by selecting the files you wish to transfer from your hard drive directory on the left side and clicking on the right pointing arrow to initiate the transfer. Note: Your main page file should be called "index.htm"

TO VIEW YOUR HOME PAGE(S)

1) Go into your web browser program (i.e. Netscape) and select the following URL (address)http://www.cnwl.igs.net/~your username/
where your username is your login username

2) This will bring up the "index.htm" home page file that you stored on our server using the FTP program.

3) In order to update your home page files, simply edit them on your PC and then transfer the new version onto the server in the same manner as above. The server will automatically overwrite your old file.
