Cancer Support Network

FAQ's

WHO ARE WE?

A network of volunteers who believe that self help and independence are healthy.

WHAT DO WE DO?

We provide cancer patients, their families and the community with information, education, resources, referrals and support.

WHY? DON'T WE ALREADY HAVE THAT?

Cancer patients and their families often state that there are gaps in the system.  The Cancer Support Network has identified unmet needs and is working to meet them.

WHAT IS A SELF HELP GROUP?

Self-help / mutual aid groups are made up of individuals who share the same problem or need and those whose members help each other in dealing with the problem.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

The central idea of self-help is: "You alone can do it - but you can't do it alone."

Although only the individual can take the actions to bring change into his/her life, there are times when it's too much to rely solely on  personal resources.  There is a unique strength in group membership which can empower a person to mobilize his/her energies and attain a sense of well-being.

WHAT DOES A PARTICIPANT DO?

Share, support, information, friendship, and strength.

Decrease feelings of isolation and loneliness.

Learn to enhance your ability to communicate about needs and feelings.

Grow in self confidence as you in turn help others.

Develop a sense of hope from hearing how others are coping.

Share practical hints on managing day-to-day concerns.

WHO FOUNDED THE CANCER SUPPORT NETWORK?

Cornwall and area had no general support for people with cancer.  A VON nurse, Lois O'Reilly, was the first coordinator for the Community Cancer Support Network.  Sheila Airey  was the only other volunteer who worked with Lois O'Reilly.  After Lois O'Reilly retired Sheila Airey took over.
