It is estimated that 1 in 6 women is abused

Violence against women is responsible for 60%

Abuse is about someone taking another person's
power and control away from them.

Women who are physically and/or mentally challenged
are even more likely to be abused than women who are not.

Abuse also happens in same-sex
relationships.

Assault is a crime and is punishable under the
Criminal Code of Canada. You have the right to call the Police if you have
been physically abused and the Police may lay a charge on the offender. A
lawyer may also be able to assist you with this.

Sometimes abusers stalk, follow or pursue their
partners long after separation has taken place. Not only is this terrifying
but it's against the law.Call Police and/or see your lawyer regarding a Peace
Bond or Restraining Order.

Abusers have often "learned" their abusive behavior
from their role models when they were children. However, this is no excuse
for the abuse. We are all responsible for our own actions.
Just Remember: You are not alone Help is available
to you. Often, abuse has gone on for years. Just because you have lived with
it for a long time doesn't mean you have to continue to live with
it.
